In the first month of this fresh new year of 2009, I am here again to report the uptime record for January 2009. Before I go with the details, you can have a look at the table below. They represent the average uptime and critical time during January 2009 in all of our servers for FTP, HTTP, MySQL, SMTP, and POP services.

FTP Service
FTP, important issue! It is needed when you want to upload your files into your websites. So, I clearly understand that you will find it annoying to find your FTP unaccessible. Anyway, our January’s FTP service uptime record showed that we reached 99.991% “okay” time and only 0.009% critical time reported. We gladly report that we met what you’ve expected.

HTTP Service
We also realize HTTP service is also significant for your website. We understand how inconvenient for you if your website is unaccessible by your visitors, especially when your site is critical and very important for your business.

For HTTP service in January, we reached 98.996% uptime and 1.004% critical time reported. We are really sorry that we didn’t meet 99.99% uptime guarantee for HTTP in January. It was caused from our scheduled maintenance to improve the performance of our servers for your further satisfaction.

MySQL Service
MySQL service is very important for dynamic website with MySQL database. As database records your customers’ registration data, e-commerce data, or archived materials; it is crucial to have the service available.

In January 2009, our MySQL service was 99.989% up and 0.011% critical time only. It means we actually have a rounded 99.99% uptime for MySQL service and we are glad that we met your expectations.

SMTP and POP Service

E-mails service is very important as with e-mails, you contact and get contacted by people. In delivering e-mail services, we report two records, SMTP and POP services. For SMTP service, we delivered 99.990% uptime and 0.010%. We are happy that we didn’t disappoint you in delivering the service.

And for POP service, we performed 99.979% uptime and there was 0.021% critical time in January for POP service. It showed that our okay time for POP was around 99.98% last month and we regret that we performed 0.02% critical time rather than just equal to or less than 0.01% critical time as there was regular maintenance to provide better performance in the future.

Last, we’d like to thank you for your kind understanding, patience, and loyalty towards our service and also we thank you for the time you have spent to read this uptime record. We’ll be back again next month as usual for February 2009 uptime.

Gabrielle

Sometimes we are confused on how much resources we need for our website and then we’ll just go with the one offering us the largest one. Well, from my experience, you should  figure out the total size of your website by knowing first how many files and how much the files’ size will be in your website, including the image files. You actually will never know how much resources you’ll use in web hosting service before you finish all the whole website pages’ design. So What Should You Do to Check? Actually, for storage resource, you can check the size of the files in megabytes, including images, videos, mp3, html web pages, dynamic scripts, etc. How? Right click on the site folder, choose properties, and see the megabyte size of the folder. It will provide you a good estimation of how much space needed to host your web site.  And you will know that you don’t need too much resources as only little space is needed to host your website.

After you have known how much space required, start to ask these questions to yourself so you will know what more to determine for your website. First, are log files needed for your website? Remember that log files tend to spend your space quicker if your site is popular. Second, what about e-mail accounts like if you use webmails? Consider that if it is not maintained regularly, tons of junk mails will be in your e-mail and it will waste your space sooner too. And don’t forget database! If you have some database files and fill them them with customer registration or e-commerce data such as product information or archived materials, it will develop into large databases and grow very fast too. Another thing to pay attention is bandwidth, that is the measurement to manage resources by most web hosts. The limit for your site traffic can be set and is counted everytime someone visits your website (your website’s visitors). Why? It is because your web data is transfered through the Internet and from the web server where your site is hosted to the browser of the person visiting your website, which will create your website traffic. How much data transfer is done increases and becomes the prediction of how much bandwidth of your website is in one month. But how to estimate your bandwidth per month? Let’s say your web file is around 100 KB per page and you get around 50 visitors. Each visitor will view 7 pages. That means the bandwidth needed will be 100 KB x 50 visitors x 7 pages each one views, resulting on 35,000 KB or 35 MB bandwidth. And in one month, you will need 30 days x 35 MB, which equals to 1050 MB or 1.05 GB. And if you think this usage is too large and you’d like to reduce the bandwidth, you can do it by reducing your page size, files size, image size, or the number of files/images used in your website. It will be good if your home page is less than 50 KB and so are the other pages. Nowadays, a large number of successful small to large E-Commerce websites operate with not much storage space, ranging from only 10 MB to 200 MB.  However, the most seen difference today is storage space is sold much cheaper and web hosts give you much more than you really use; while earlier, storage space is not that cheap.  But don’t get influenced by large storage offer with cheap prices. My suggestion is, although storage space may be very cheap these days, don’t buy more than you need! Keep your money! You better buy one that give you the suitable space size for your website with good prices and quality.

Remember that if later you have reached the limit and may need more, you can always upgrade or buy more space based on your website needs. Also remember that if you have smaller site and smaller files size, your website pages will load much faster than those who have large files size or large websites. Keep in mind that people would prefer visit websites that load fast!

Website has been a common stuff for computer users. Almost everybody who uses computer has it. They develop and design it for multiple use; either it is personal, business, family websites, or etc. However, how many of them have maximized it to rake their instant revenue if they have no goods or services to sell? In fact, there are profitable funs you can gain from owning a website.

The first you can do from your website, as everybody knows, is of course selling your own goods or services in your website. With a website, you can build your online store and optimize your SEO and SEM, so Internet addicts can find your site easily, visit, and buy your products if they are interested or need them. And next thing you’ll realize is money rolls into your bank account. But still, use the proper and safe payment gateways when you decide how you will accept online payment from your customers. You can use those like authorize.net or PayPal, which is safer for you and your customers.

And instead of only selling goods and services to get your income, you can also use your website to offer advertising service. This means you have companies who would like to advertise in your website by placing their banners. Mostly, to make others interested in advertising in your website, you should ensure your website is well-known and has credibility as even you, yourself, will not be willing to advertise in unknown websites I am sure.

To get advertising contracts, you can start by joining affiliate programs of those big companies and be their affiliate. From it, you can earn your own commission and also increase popularity plus credibility of your website. The commission itself depends on each companies’ policy. Here, in Host Department, we offer you 25% commission of the total web hosting plan sale you can get for us.

Well, anyway, back to the topic, if your website has won credibility and popularity, you can set up your own advertising Service Level Agreement on how much you can earn from the advertisements you place in your website. There are few conditions you can apply for your advertising service, on when you deserve your payment.

Receive your money from payment per impression (CPM or Cost Per Thousand, which is M in latin numeral). This means you’ll get paid based on how many times the advertisement’s banner is displayed on your site. For example, if you set $20 CPM, it means you get twenty bucks every 1000 times the advertisement’s banner is displayed in your website.

Or, you can get paid per click. This means everytime visitors of your website click the advertisement’s banner in your website, you will receive payment per how many times they click on the banner. Nevertheless, it depends on how attractive the banner is or how high the traffic of your site is.

High traffic site will have a higher chance to be clicked than the lower traffic one. Also, you can earn better result if you carefully select the design of the banners to match your target audiences or website visitors so they will be attracted to click it.

Lastly, you also can get payment per sale (pay per sale). But this means you will only earn money if your visitors click through the banner and purchase any product from the advertiser or register for the service. Remember, just like pay per click, you receive better result if you carefully select the advertisers’s banner to suit your website’s visitors and increase your website traffic.

So now, let’s not neglect your website just as it is. Earn whatever you can get from it!
