Back when I was searching for web hosts for the first time, I noticed that many of the hosting directories that I visited were owned by hosting companies, and these hosting companies would advertise themselves beyond a reasonable amount, sometimes listing themselves as the #1 recommended host or a Best Host. I became uncomfortable with this, and I felt that they created the directory for the sole purpose of promoting their own hosting company rather than helping people. In addition to this, many other hosting directories allowed hosting companies to add their sites by using an automated entry form which listed their site without being reviewed. As I browsed through the hosting directories that allowed this automatic type of submission, I encountered many web hosts that depicted vague hosting plans and some that asked for credit card numbers and personal information before allowing the visitor to read the features of their hosting plans. Some didnt offer half of what most of the other companies offered and were significantly over-priced for what they offered, and some werent even hosting companies at all.
